On June 26, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act. To mark the 80th anniversary, Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) has submitted a statement to the Congressional Record to honor credit unions, calling them “ part of the great fabric that makes our country strong.” His statement recounts the creation and history of credit unions, and of CUNA, and how they have evolved over the decades as consumers’ needs have become more complex.
Noting that the number of consumer-members of credit unions is on the cusp of 100 million memberships across the nation, Royce concluded his statement saying, “Credit unions are living up to the promise outlined in their principles. They are institutions that their members and all Americans can choose to be their best financial partner.”
