An app targeting customers of the Israeli financial institution Mizrahi Bank has been discovered in the official Google Play store. Called BankMirage, the app harvested only user login names and not passwords. Once the user id was stored, the customer received a message saying the login failed and to reinstall the legitimate app from the Play Store.
Android users have been urged to only download apps from Google Play and Amazon Apps stores, on the assumption that apps are effectively screened before being put in front of users. Still valid advice – but it is not guaranteed. The threat from BankMirage has been neutralized, as Google has removed the app; however, it’s hard to use traditional means to protect yourself from malware apps. Source: Credit Union Times
