News from the Delaware Credit Union League Winter 2007 - 2008

There was no loss of holiday spirit among credit unions this past holiday season — many helped out with special community projects with help from staff and members. Here are a few examples that credit unions shared with the League.
  • The employees of American Spirit FCU adopted a family for the holidays.
  • Staff members at Chestnut Run FCU, Edge Moor DuPont FCU, and the Delaware Credit Union League were three of the 30 groups who purchased items to fill stockings for the Salvation Army’s “Toy Shop.”
  • Del-One (Delaware) FCU joined with the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce in hosting a business mixer to benefit the Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive. With the help of over 125 business professionals, more than $100 and 100 pounds of non-perishable food items were donated to the Food Bank. The credit union also sponsored the 2007 Holiday Auction and Taste of Milford event, which benefitted the Milford Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Veterans Home. They also collected toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and participated in the Festival of Trees.

  • Staff members at Delaware Alliance FCU “dressed down” in order to raise money for The News Journal’s Needy Family Fund.
  • DEXSTA FCU held a clothing drive to benefit the Friendship House/Clothing Bank of Delaware. A core ministry of Friendship House, the Clothing Bank of Delaware distributes donated clothing to community agencies, provides employment for disadvantaged women in the community and creates volunteer opportunities for a variety of local business and organizations. The credit union reported that member support was overwhelming with the amount of winter clothing that was donated during the drive.

  • During the holiday season, staff from Dover FCU manned the Salvation Army bell-ringing station at Sam's Club for an entire day. This effort raised over $600 which is used to assist families who are in crisis.
  • First State FCU adopted a single mother with two children and provided them with gifts through the Caring Hearts, Helping Hands program.
  • Delaware Veterans Post No.1 Toys for Tots’ chairman Tom Pitts recently sent ICI America FCU a thank you letter for donating gifts for the annual 5k run/walk held on November 3. The CU contributed mugs and duffle bags. The event raised over $7500 for the Kirkwood Highway Marine Unit’s annual Toys for Tots drive.
