Chris Gill‚ NCCCO‚ Risk Management Consultant‚ CUNA Mutual Group‚ will discuss current fraud trends; including frequency‚ severity and mitigation steps. Some of the specific functional areas that will be reviewed are Wire Transfers‚ Fraudulent Deposits‚ Lending and Employee Dishonesty. Case studies are used to accentuate how credit unions can use various loss control techniques to minimize their risk exposure to fraudulent activity.

That’s a day you probably spent using your strengths. Strengths are the parts of our job we’re good at and enjoy. Sadly‚ research says that most of us don’t get to do what we do best every day. Chances are‚ if you’re like most people‚ you‚ve never spent time identifying your strengths and intentionally trying to leverage them. During this session‚ you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn why playing to your strengths is the most important decision you can make.
  • Participate in a process that will put you on the trail to identifying your strengths.
  • Select strategies that will assist you in more intentionally using your strengths on a daily basis.

Rxs for Future Effective CU Boards: Recruiting/Retaining/Revitalizing Next Generation Directors

John Vardallas‚ CEO of TheAmericanBoomeR.com‚ will explore methods for identifying‚ recruiting and retaining credit union volunteers including an overview of the roles and responsibilities and succession of board members.

Learner Outcomes will include:

  • How to identify the right type of persons to serve
  • How to explore proper recruitment emphasizing on younger new blood
  • How to create strategies for a “Balanced Board” that reflects membership
  • How to review methods of training, reward and recognition programs to keep volunteers energized
  • How to review the characteristics of revitalized successful board members and high performing credit union boards

The Affordable Care Act and Your Credit Union

This session, presented by Michael Buchler‚ Vice President‚ Director of Employee Benefits Division‚ Williams Agency‚ Inc.‚ and Larry Turnbull‚ Executive Vice President of David M. Banet & Associates‚ will be an overview of the Affordable Care Act including the provisions currently in place. How the ACA impacts your business‚ the things you need to know for 2014 and the things you need to prepare for in the years to come will be reviewed. The various healthcare options available to business owners and a review of the Healthcare Reform 2014 Compliance checklist will be provided. All credit unions should prepare now for the future "Pay or Play" penalties.

Veteran credit union advocate John McKechnie takes a wide-ranging view of the situation‚ blending his four decades of experience as an industry lobbyist and regulator to provide a unique perspective on what credit unions need to do to survive and thrive in a difficult and complex environment."

Michael Buchler

Michael V. Buchler is a Delaware resident and has been a licensed life and health insurance agent since 1987. He specializes in employee benefit programs featuring medical‚ dental‚ life‚ disability‚ vision‚ Health Reimbursement Accounts‚ Health Savings Accounts‚ Flexible Spending Account and both fully insured‚ partial self insured and employee benefit captive plans. He also works in the individual medical and Medicare space. Mike is past president of the Delaware chapter of the National Association of Health Underwriters‚ past Membership Chair of the Delaware chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He is active in his community serving on the boards of several charitable organizations. He has hosted several Healthcare Reform seminars throughout the state over the last two years.

Larry Turnbull

Larry is a founding Partner and Executive Vice President of David M. Banet & Associates‚ located in Exton PA. He is responsible for operations‚ business development and recruitment. In addition‚ Larry consults clients on insurance contracts and administrative obligations. Prior to starting Banet & Associates‚ Larry was with Consulting Group‚ Inc.‚ where he was responsible for a large block of direct and brokered business.

As the past President of the Greater Philadelphia Health Underwriters Association‚ Larry has been involved with regulatory changes at the Federal and State levels regarding the impact to clients and the brokers community. He holds a BS degree from LaSalle University.

Chris Gill

Chris Gill is a risk management consultant in Credit Union Protection Risk Management for CUNA Mutual Group. In this role‚ he assists credit unions in identifying areas of risk in their operations and recommends appropriate controls to reduce loss exposures.

Gill joined CUNA Mutual Group in 2012 and serves credit unions in Maryland‚ Virginia‚ Washington DC‚ Delaware and southeast Pennsylvania. Prior to joining CUNA Mutual Group‚ Gill was the vice president of Risk Management at NARFE Premier Federal Credit Union.

Gill graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in business administration‚ holds a MBA from the University of Mary Washington and is a NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer (NCCO).

Joe Bertotto

Joe Bertotto is the Chief Culture Officer at My CU Services‚ LLC. Joe’s work is dedicated to helping individuals realize their best self‚ to the advancement of servant leadership and to creating great workplaces built on high care‚ high performance and high accountability.

Prior to joining My CU Services‚ LLC‚ Joe was the Chief Culture Officer of Graystone Bank‚ one of the fastest growing banks in Pennsylvania history. The meteoric rise of Graystone was attributed in large part to the company culture that Joe architected. Joe has also held positions at Sovereign Bank as the Manager of Leadership and Organization Development as well as PNC Bank where Joe was the Manager of Corporate Leadership and Executive Education. Joe has been working in the field of leadership and organization development for over 30 years.

Joe has written numerous articles on leadership‚ strengths and organizational culture that have appeared in a variety of publications.

Joe holds a BA from Temple University and has completed graduate work at The Pennsylvania State University.

John J. McKechnie‚ III

John McKechnie joined Total Spectrum as a Partner in 2011. This follows five years in government as the Director of Public and Congressional Affairs at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the federal agency that regulates and insures credit unions.

McKechnie’s career in the credit union industry began in 1987‚ as the Director of Political Action with the Credit Union National Association — the industry’s largest trade association — and culminated as the chief federal lobbyist for CUNA.

Among the highlights of his tenure at CUNA was John’s role in creating the nationwide grassroots campaign that created the momentum for passage of the landmark 1998 credit union membership legislation. McKechnie is also recognized for his work in passing bankruptcy abuse prevention legislation in 2005‚ and for propelling CUNA into the front ranks of Washington’s advocacy groups.

He left the private sector in 2006‚ when he became a Presidential appointee to the National Credit Union Administration. As Director of Public and Congressional Affairs for NCUA, McKechnie was responsible for media and congressional relations for this federal financial regulator during the recent economic dislocation. He was instrumental in the formulation and passage of key legislation that enabled the credit union industry’s federal insurance fund to remain solvent and stable‚ and also was the day-to-day manager of a multi-media campaign that netted over $5 million in donated advertising for NCUA.

Prior to joining the Credit Union National Association‚ McKechnie served as a congressional aide to Representative Stan Parris (R-VA)‚ and as press secretary or organizational director for a number of gubernatorial and legislative campaigns throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
